Brain Jacques Redwall

Plot: Welcome to Mossflower Wood, where the gentle mice have gathered to celebrate a year of peace and abundance. All is well… until a sinister shadow falls across the ancient stone abbey of Redwall. It is rumored that Cluny is coming - Cluny, the terrible one-eyed rat and his savage horde - Cluny, who has vowed to conquer Redwall Abbey! The only hope for the besieged mice lies in the lost sword of the legendary Martin the Warrior. And so begins the epic quest of a bumbling young apprentice - a courageous mouse who would rise up, fight back…and become a legend himself.

My Review and Thoughts:

A truly magical masterpiece built with imagination of originality and the concept of capturing a perfect action adventure for all ages. This is a perfect example of characters, story and a lasting mark on the written word history of literature.

Over 20 years ago this was first published and has remained a landmark fantasy novel to this day. It’s more then just a simple fantasy book, it’s a must read magical tale that grabs the reader and sends them on a journey in the realm of Redwall and it’s tiny little characters and the evil enemies they face.

This is the first book in the saga of Redwall which there are many books in this series but for the true understanding of this place one must read the first book which I am reviewing. A priceless New York times bestselling series Brian Jacques is able to capture the reader in a whole different light of a written story.

The main player Matthias a small little runt like mouse dreams of the legend of the warrior Martin and his fights against the giants of horror, like a cat. But as it is explained to Matthias the warrior side to Mossflower is of the olden days and that now they are a peaceful place that takes care of others and helps others in trouble or in sickness. They are not attacked because all the other species are in agreement that the mice of Mossflower will help them in times of trouble. A pact has been made.

Still Matthias dreams of the actions and adventures that his hero did do and soon the peaceful agreement and atmosphere will change as a new horror is stepping in. This time in the form of a Rat and his other mean followers. Matthias is the character we can all relate to or at least I can. His imagination and his will to succeed no matter being an orphan and runt. He moves forward and fights his great fight of belonging. He does not let his small self and runt like nature or better yet feeling like an outcast, affect him. Matthias must seek courage and the will and strength to follow his hero.

This book brings a light hearted wonder to written word and yet as you read it you become apart of it, you become a mouse and help and follow Matthias on his quest and journey. The book seems so real and fantastic that your mind is giddy with pleasure as you read each page and the story unfolds in all it’s wonderful glory. Truly as the book states THE LEGEND BEGINS and it does. The book is a flawless fun read that kids will love and even adults will cherish.

This is a believable creative wonder by Brian Jacques. The wonder and excitement and the humor of this story comes together in rich detail. I will say from the bottom of my heart and book lover’s mind that Brain Jacques is a true story telling  god,  a make believe master and craftsman of talented words that flow into images that linger and last for a lifetime.

A fun and beautiful book that brings back those childhood dreams and adventures of make believe. True action and adventure that crawls up the spine and beats the heart with anticipation on what is to happen next.
