George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire Saga

George R.R. Martin's
A Song of Ice and Fire Saga

Plot: Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

My Review and Thoughts:

This is a wonderful epic. This thick plotted ordeal runs rampant with characters and situations. This is epic book saga. This book series which became an HBO show is a modern classic of a story. These books have many characters and displays in vivid detail each one of them throughout. Each chapter is about someone as you begin the tale in book one.

I am not a huge fan when it comes to a lot of characters sometimes writers add too many characters and the reader gets lost trying to keep track but with that said I enjoyed the set up of how each chapter is a person and how this story unfolds with each player weaving themselves together. A true modern epic that will stand the test of time and I feel will become apart of classic literature setting. The first three books are award worthy masterpieces.

The characters are perfectly built up and complex. Each one holds a different story to be hold. Some are intoxicating as you can't get enough and others you loath and wish them to be slain, that's the beauty and quality of the amazing writing, the flawless built atmosphere and the stunning story telling that graces these books.

This is a great Fantasy Epic by George R.R. Martin. First started in August 6th 1996. The first book starts with three different story lines all important to tell the complete story. The first being: In the Seven Kingdoms: Lord Eddard Stark known as Ned who is Lord of Winterfell which is the ancestral House of Stark which is the noble house of The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and ruler of the North. Ned has six legit kids and one bastard child. There they come across seven direwolf pups which after the kids plead, Ned allows them to keep them. Soon the King Robert Baratheon comes to Winterfell bringing Ned news.

Next plot is: On the Wall. This part goes along with the introduction in the prologue about a outside kingdom in the northern wilderness beyond the wall which is a 700 foot high and 300 mile long barrier of ice and magic.

The last plot being: In the East: This tells about across the sea in the Free City of Pentos and the characters Viserys Targaryen and his sister Daenerys who both live in exile. Viserys wants to gain his kingdom back because he was the male heir of Aerys the 2nd but the mad king was overthrown.

The book consist of eight main players and a minor player in the prologue of the book. The book won the Locus Award for best novel in 1997 and won the Ignotus Award in 2003 for Best Foreign Novel.

This set of books is a passionate mythical and historical fantasy that brings the reader deep into the story of this epic tale. Very imaginative and deep and dark and very believable and brings the reader into the story and gives a sense you belong inside the Game of Thrones and it's saga.

The outstanding reality of the books is the well plotted story lines that are unpredictable and very entertaining. The humanity of the players bleeds off the page and enters the readers emotional reality. This modern Lord of the Rings set up gives a story of war, adventure, love, pain and so much more that traces the very fabric of creating a story that seems real. By comparing it to other classic books I think it down plays it's importance and so I think we as readers should say the truth, this is epic, this is a modern masterpiece and by comparing it, you do it injustice because this series stands alone.

I think by comparing it to other fantasy books or books in general is a true insult to the original and powerful makeup of this set of books or at least the first three books. The first book is a true start to a true masterpiece saga that in my viewpoint should be read by everyone that loves books. This book series is a masterful suspense epic of violence and passion. A story that digs deep into the soul and showcases a whole other world. A history like no other, a player of characters that are written in various ways that the reader knows. Brothers, sisters, uncles, mother's and father's they are your family, your enemies, your loved ones when you turn each page.

The first book brings you deep into the story building the setting, giving you the nature of time and the players involved, a priceless introduction in my viewpoint because the characters are so life like. The surroundings of the story jump from the page into your imagination. The darkness and horrible reality of certain characters stick with you sending mixed emotions inside you as the story unfolds.

The second book in the series A Clash of Kings starts right off where the first book ends. A civil war between the Seven Kingdoms. The Night Watch, those who guard the Wall set out to investigate the weird and odd people who are called the Wildlings. Many of the main characters are more advanced and more in depth struggles happen. Daenery's Targaryen moves forward on her quest. Like the first this a spectacular created culture and fantasy world that seems so real. Another priceless example of a well written medieval history setting.

It feels at time that this is not fiction and that you are reading a true account of a family and all those Kingdoms involved. I found myself like the first one not wanting to put it down. I found myself with lack of sleep just to get the next chapter in, the next adventure. This is a terrific part two and is as good as the first, each chapter showcases the story.

The third book: A Storm of Swords starts out a little before the last ended. The book moves ahead as the War is growing thicker into each Kingdom. As mentioned in the second book the five Kings still fight to maintain there crowns. The odd people known as the Wildlings mentioned in part two are now secured with a leader known as Mance Rayder who leads this army and heads straight for the Wall. I think what is interesting about this book is in the French edition it was spilt up into four different books and in the United Kingdom it was split into two sections. It is a very long book but one with great storytelling that has the reader turning page after page with excitement.

Book four in the saga has the War of the Five Kings at an end. Like the first three the saga is rich and complex and brings the beauty and reality and brings George R.R. Martin's grand storytelling to the forefront for the reader to embrace. Martin's true quality of an amazing fantasy epic that seems to grow into this never ending orgy of characters and deep dark plots with intrigue which only grows thicker into the imagination of the reader. This book is not as great as the first three, it's still good and amazing and I still loved it but I feel it does not live up to the masterpiece title as the first three do.

A Dance with Dragons is the fifth in the Saga. The aftermath of the massive battle, and most of all the very future of the Seven Kingdoms display itself out in this installment.

Conflicts, threats and most of all betrayal as would be expected in this epic saga. Sadly this is the slowest of the series and I felt in honest a little bored at times. These books are so heavy and thick, sometimes it works and other times it does not because he tends to ramble a little or at least stretch out the story a little to much in this book. Clocking at another thousand and more pages shows you that your in for a long read.

These books are filled with sex and violence and epic sword play of war and political ramblings of Kingdoms. Mystery, suspense, thrills and edge of your seat action and adventure bleed out from this tale of fantasy that seems apart of history as true. I feel the first three books are masterpieces of lit. They are a complex orgy of words and actions and characters that make this fantasy tale shine bright with wonder.

Books four and five are great just not as powerful and do not have that art like wonder the first three have, that does not mean they are bad because they both are great books and I highly recommend them. The last two (as of this writing, because this is a seven book saga) are the weakest in the series and the first three are the strongest.

Seek out this epic story of wonder and amazement. A true priceless word and fictional orgy of pleasure for the imagination, a true saga that bleeds for fans. A lasting series of books that bring a fresh and original and powerful outcome into the world of written word.

Can I say wow: Total Pages Read 4655 pages.
